Young Life
Agnes Gonxhu Bojaxhiu was born on the 26th of August, 1910. She was born in Albania/ Macedonia, now Skopje which is now the Republic of Macedonia. She was the youngest of 3 children, her eldest sister Aga and her older brother Lazar. Her dad’s name was Nikola Bojaxhiu and her mother’s name was Drandofile Bojaxjiu. “Sadly Agnes’s father died when she was very young. Her father, Nikola was a contractor, working in a successful construction business. He was also heavily involved in the politics of that time.” Resources say that his death was sudden and shocking. This might have been caused due to his political involvement. Agnes’mother was a devoted Catholic and never missed mass. Her mother’s influence guided Agnes in the right path. When Agnes joined a youth group which was conducted at her church by Father Franjo Jambrekovic, the leader of the group, Agnes learned many things. Father Jambrekovic, liked to read letters from missionaries who had gone to the province Bengal in India. This started Agnes’ interest in helping the poor. In 1928 when Agnes was 18 years, God showed her what he had in mind for her life. God told her that she has many gifts and she must use them for people who need help in the world and to love and care for them. To follow Gods calling, the same year Agnes left her family and joined the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin, Ireland. This convent had a missionary program in India.
